toolHOBO CAMP
Hobo Camp – A research apiary owned and managed by Bluebird Canyon Farms, Hobo Camp is nestled within the coastal chaparral clad hills above the farm. Surrounded by thousands of acres of open space, the apiary is home to a land race honeybee variant, a hybridized cross between local feral varieties and domestic European strains. Cared for naturally, Hobo Camp honeybees support the farm by pollinating our fruiting plants and providing our local community with honey, wax and propolis. The apiary is also used to teach beekeeping to those interested in learning this ancient agricultural practice

Bluebird Design Center – Located in a 1,500 square-foot “barn” near the Hobo Camp Trailhead, Bluebird Design Center is a full service workshop supporting various planning, design, fabrication, and maintenance efforts required by the farm and other projects. The “workshop” contains tools and instruments to support maintenance of various electrical and mechanical systems including rotating equipment, IC engines, electrical and hydraulic systems. Tools are also in place for working wood, metal, stone, concrete, plastics, leather, and textiles, as well as numerous “land tools” to support site development and regenerative landscaping projects. The workshop is configured for three-phase electrical power and serviced by a 600 amp power supply. Plans are in place to install a solid object printer supported by 3-D modeling software. The workshop provides engineers and designers with a platform to shorten the time from concept design to prototype development for equipment, tools, and other items.

Bluebird Lodge – The centerpiece of social life at the farm, Bluebird Lodge is a 19th century farmhouse fully restored in a traditional California architectural style. Fully modernized with state of the art systems and utilities, the “Lodge” is an eclectic and bohemian setting to relax within and enjoy all of the farm’s offerings. FoodLab– A full service, professional kitchen located within Bluebird Lodge. Food Lab™ is a source of creative inspiration where recipes are developed and tested, produce is preserved, nutritional protocol is deliberated and clean food is prepared and served. At various times you may find us here baking, fermenting, drying, conserving, and experimenting with all sorts of items ranging from kefir and tempeh, to soaps and lotions.

Cropping Terraces – The bulk of our produce is grown here in these terraced beds. Through crop rotation, vigilant soil care, and innovative organic and natural pest management, our beds are always overflowing with beautiful vegetables.

Aviary – The Aviary is home to a sustainable flock of Black Copper Marans, a heritage breed of poultry from France. Black Copper Marans are a dual purpose breed that produce large chocolate brown eggs and fine quality meat. The Aviary was built to support our breeding program and to aid production of our biodynamic horticultural supplements used to sustain our soil fertility programs.

Bungalow – The Bungalow is a proposed LEED certified two bedroom residential pavilion that commingles the inner and surrounding outdoor spaces. Fully modernized, with highly efficient systems this sleek modern structure is designed to blend into the surrounding landscape.

Produce Wash Station – Although our produce is grown organically it still needs a little rinse off to keep the soil out of the FoodLab. The Produce Wash Station includes several large stainless steel wash bins where we can clean this nutritious food for consumption by the community.

Farm of the Future – A large demonstration aquaponic system, Farm of the Future is an elegant, stylized non-conventional agricultural system where water is circulated from a 1,500 gallon masonry fish tank and delivered to various planters filled with specialized growing media and planted with various culinary plants. By-products carried along with the water from the fish tank are broken down by microorganisms residing within the growing media and used by the plants as nutrients. Clean water is then recirculated back to the fish tank. Farm of the Future supports our local community with greens and is also used as a teaching station.

Greenhouse – Formerly a canteen used by the Artist Colony in residence on the property during the 1960s to 1980s. Now fully restored, the Greenhouse was converted in 2014 to a fully functioning, climate controlled greenhouse.

Flower Chateau– During the 1960s to 1980s the Flower Chateau was the residence of Roger Van De Vanter, an American ceramicist whose work is exhibited in numerous collections worldwide. In 2014 this original micro-home was completely restored in its traditional architectural vernacular. Fully modernized with all new systems, clad with reclaimed lumber that was milled and finished on-site, the Flower Chateau is a little blossom perched on the hill overlooking the farm’s fields.

Lower Gabion Meadow – The Lower Gabion Meadow is a 2,000 square-foot great lawn established using drought tolerant native California grasses.

Camp Bluebird – Originally a camping facility developed in the 1920’s by the Tom Sawyer Camp for Boys, Camp Bluebird is a small clearance used as a staging area for ongoing ecological restoration activities in the Chaparral above the farm.

Farm Road – This is the “back of the house” where we store large farm tools, stockpile materials, park vehicles and will be the location for our reclaimed water reservoirs. The Farm Road is equipped for business with a 200-amp three-phase electrical power supply and other utilities.
