Bluebird Canyon Farms strives to be a community resource and to be recognized as a model of sustainable urban living.

Farm Operations

Bluebird Canyon FarmsBluebird Canyon Farms is a 15 acre operating biodynamic farm located outside the village of Laguna Beach in the San Joaquin Hills. The Farm is managed as a community agriculture project offering heritage varieties of seasonal produce to individuals and restaurants in the local economy. We do this through our Harvest Share subscription program which provides individuals opportunities to purchase a weekly share of our harvest. We also offer local chefs ability to procure fresh produce for their menus and offer to grow specialized produce for qualified chefs under contract.

We grow food in two seasons Fall/Winter when we produce cold tolerant cropping varieties and Spring/Summer when more heat tolerant varieties are available. Many of our varieties are cultivars raised onsite for many years. We propagate these from seed collected, preserved and maintained in our seed vault. This work supports efforts to develop a land race on the farm comprised of domesticated species of plants and animals that have adapted to the natural and cultural environment of our site. These varieties are unique to us and are only available in local markets.

In addition to heritage varieties of produce the farm grows culinary and medicinal herbs, micro-greens, edible fungi, hydroponic produce and tree crops. The farm also raises heritage Black Copper Marans chickens, a wild strain of honeybees in our apiary, fish in our aquaponics system and produces a wide variety of specialty culinary and wellness products in our Food Lab kitchen. There is a lot going on at any given moment so please check back regularly to learn more about the exciting things we are doing. Click here to learn more about our farm related projects
